EMA Crossover (9/21): Fast Momentum, Filtered for Trend

2026-08-07 · 2 min read

The signal

The 9-day exponential average crossing above the 21-day: short-term momentum overtaking the swing trend. It's the fastest of our moving-average signals — and speed cuts both ways.

The problem with raw crossovers

In a trendless market, 9/21 crossovers fire constantly and mean nothing — up, down, up, down, a papercut per trade. That's why our scanner refuses the signal unless ADX is above 20, i.e. unless an actual trend exists for the crossover to join. This one filter removes the majority of junk signals.

Our scanner's rules

  • Fresh cross (within 3 sessions) + ADX > 20.
  • RSI above 55 adds confidence (momentum agreeing).
  • Entry: current price. Stop: below the recent swing low. Target: 2R.

Where it shines

As a timing trigger on stocks you already like — a strong AlgoScore name from the dashboard, a sector leader, a watchlist candidate. Fundamentals pick the what; the crossover suggests the when.

Common mistakes

  • Trading it on everything that crosses — 2,000 stocks generate endless crossovers; the edge is in *which* stocks you allow it to trigger on.
  • Expecting it to catch tops and bottoms: it's a momentum-continuation tool. By design it's late to turns and early to exhaustion.
  • Skipping the stop because "the averages will cross back" — they will, far below your pain threshold.
